On May 1, Apple updated sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.3 of its App Review Guidelines, stating that “there is no prohibition on an app including buttons, external links, or other calls to action” that lead users to outside payment flows—but only on the U.S. storefront.

The move complies with the 2021 Epic v. Apple injunction, now upheld on appeal, which bars Apple from blocking “anti-steering” links.

Reader apps like Spotify and Kindle already surface “Get Book” or “Subscribe” buttons that open a web checkout—bypassing Apple’s commission. Epic has brought Fortnite back with a dual IAP selector showing a 20% discount outside Apple’s system.

Non-reader apps must still offer in-app purchase (IAP) parity, and Apple warns that enforcement may tighten after this “fast-track” rollout.

Developers should note that links must open in the default browser—no embedded WebViews. Use the ExternalPurchaseLink entitlement only if you remove IAP entirely; otherwise, no entitlement is needed. It’s also required to disclose that Apple isn’t responsible for external transactions.

Monitor conversion rates closely: early data shows a 6-10% drop-off between tap and completed web checkout, so streamline your funnel accordingly.
